Default best nearfields

Hello again,

Yes, a thoroughbred newbie here, just wanting to pick the brains of the much respected souls that frequent this board. (apart from schom, of course! In the UK there is a lovely term for "schom" types....'NUMPTY!')

OK back to work, this time it's nearfield monitors for music to picture projects.

To date I am between the GEN Elec 415-670 GEN.1029A, HHB Circle 5 Actives and some Mackies that I can't remeber the model no. for.....retail around £950 ($1300).

Any ideas?

Regards

Josh

If they are the Mackie HR824, go for it. I've hear great reports and they will probably be my next buy too.

a buddy of mine has the HR824's, he showed me a recent mix on 'em, and boy do they sound great.

I still like my JBL LSR-28's, too.

I have the 824's and the berringer dual 31 band w/ pink noise/analyzer and I have actually dialed the speakers in after much effort. Any speakers alone will Not cut a mix intended to tell you what it will actually sound like after you burn it to CD and carry it to your car and really listen to it on several other systems. Acoustics is a major science and I doubt many of us have the $$ to create a perfect acoustic enviornment...Good luck....JT

Josh,
I too have a pair of Mackie HR824's and I highly recomend them. Plenty of head room and very adaptable to various setups.

I have the Mackies. They really do sound great. I am mostly a piano player/singer and my biggest problem is that when I go from listening to my chops through the Mackies to some crappy NYC dive bar PA, I cringe. If only every PA sounded as good as my Mackies. I believe that when I was looking for monitors I found a few posts on the net saything that the Mackies were *too* good. I think I now know what they mean.

I did compare the Mackies side by side to many other brands for quite some time before I bought them. To me (that's operative phrase) they sounded most transparent; the least amount of "coloring". Bottom line: listen long and hard before you buy.

Hi,

I don't know the Mackie's, only heard them once..

But: I do know Genelec 1030's and they're pretty awesome..

They're the only monitors I know (in their price range) that make monitoring classical music possible. If you have to listen critically for a good stereo image and balance on an orchestra (recorded with only a few, very good microphones), the Genelecs are a must!

But if you are mainly into pop music, I can understand that the Mackie's could offer a lot of value for the money...(the Genelec 1030's are about $1500 a pair, I think..Be sure to buy the magnetically shielded version)

Greets, Dan

Hi GIE
No I haven't heard then yet, but when it comes time to buy some speakers I will most certainly try out a number of products(mine are fine at the moment). Where I normally buy my gear I get to take a swag of it home and try it out. In that way I can take my time and not be pressured, suppose when you spend $50K they consider you as a good customer.
