Default where should I install plugins?

Hi,

I have pt 10.3.1 on mac lion..

Im going to get a external harddrive tomorrow (i think) we are going to look for one at sams or best buy... any recommendations?

also, should I install my plugins melodyne? on computer or external hard drive... says my cpu is running out of power or something to that effect and to close some tracks or plug ins everytime I use melodyne

Plugins always need to reside on the system drive.
