Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
I am thinking of upgrading my laptop to an i7 32gig (4x8) quad core sandy bridge but wanted to know whether all of the cores will be accessed by Pro Tools. I have heard that only one of the cores will be accessed so the other 3 cores will be redundant. Is this correct?
Thanks Algy |

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
and if you already have a quad core, should you turn one or two of those off?

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
Quad core PC's work fine and there is no reason to turn off any cores unless you need to free up cpu for some big plugin instrument packages(PT will use all the cores you allow it to use). My i7 rigs are rocking with all cores used(hyperthreading ON). But there is a difference in i7 desktop and i7 laptop cpu's. For the best performance, build a desktop machine with either Sandybridge E on X79(big budget) or i7 9xx on X58(950 and up are plenty potent). Make sure you get the proper RAM kit for the motherboard(IOW, don't put 2x4GB sticks on a triple channel mobo).

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
Thanks Albee,
I don't won't to build a desktop unit as I want a portable recording system that I can take with me to the country, hence the need for a laptop. Thanks Algy |

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
I've heard it like Algy, that PT only uses one or two cores.
Don't know if this viewpoint is a myth -- like nVidia video cards only turned out to be -- or an accepted fact. Also have heard PT will never use all cores in its present version. But Albee is. So is this a raging debate or a black and white issue??? |

Pro tools has supported multi-proc/core and hyper threading since somewhere around pro tools 7, I believe. So when you go to the playback engine settings you will see all your "processors" (real and virtual) and be able to select how many you want to use for RTAS processing. Most people find they get best results with it set to (max available - 1). The frees up the last processor to do OS related tasks and other non-real time tasks away from the RTAS engine.
So in short more is better and can be used by pro tools. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
I can settle that question with a little experiment I did.
AMD dual core 3GHz Dverb test score 104 (PT8) Intel i7 920 quad(XP) Dverb score 320 (PT8) Intel i7 920 quad(Win7 64 bit) Dverb score 500 (PT8)(exact machine above w/new OS) Intel i7 950 quad Dverb score 520 (PT9)

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
PT10 is still only 32 bit, and although it uses all the cores (it did on my Q6600 CPU) it can't use more than a little less than 4GB of RAM.
I had a 30 day demo of PT10 and decided not to buy it because it was 32 bit. I've been told that PT11 will be 64 bit and I'll revisit it then.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need it to be 64-bit? Fwiw if you have the CPTK or HD you can use more ram through the disc cache. Kind of a moot point for a lot of people. I've just never had a session that hit the 32-bit limit. I know some do and I know why. Just curious what you needed it for?

Re: Pro Tools 10 and quad cores
Thanks Hobee1952 for that test. I would like to see the DVERBS with one, then two , then three, then four.
I wonder what the % difference would be. 25%?? That is something that I have not seen tested. I am not going to have the time to do it myself, |
