Default From OS 9 to 9.2 does it really matter?

Sounds like a bit of a dum question but should I really consider updating the OS for my home rig? Everything has been fine running PTLE 5.1/001 on OS9 so does 9.2 really matter or is it more effort than its worth? I feel like I should always try and keep things up-to-date as poss. What you you guys reckon?

IMHO, yes you should update. 9.2.2 is extremely stable and yields a slight increase in performance. We've been running it for several months and are very pleased with the results.

Also, 9.2.2 is the end of the line of r OS9, there will be no further upgrades from there. It will be the last upgrade you'll need to do.

Hope this is helpful.

where0129 really knows his stuff, so trust him more than me...

however, if i ain't broke, don't fix it -- all the probs i have is when i tinker for the sake of tinkering, and then spend hours fixing.

The cool thing about the upgrade, is that you can download it for free at the Mac website. The answer to your question is "Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other." I was running Os 9, but I was forced to upgrade by my new Stylus Vinyl Groove Module, because it won't operate on anything less; and I imagine that this will happen over and over again as far as the newer third party development goes. So yes definitely upgrade, because as I just said if you plan on using newer software like Stylus, you'll need it.

I had problems with 9.2 when trying to run applications that had been installed under 9.0.4 - errors of types 1,2,3,10, and eventually it wouldn't boot at all.............
Applications that were installed under 9.2 were fine though (initially).
Back to 9.1 and all is better !?!

Craig -

I recently wiped my system drive to start from scratch, and the first thing I did after reinstalling OS 9.0.4 was upgrade it. Be advised though that you cannot upgrade directly to 9.2.2 from 9.0.4. You must first upgrade to 9.1, then 9.2.1, then 9.2.2.

I have to say that I am enjoyed improved performance across the board (stability, speed, power, etc.), and I do recommend you try it.

If wiping your system drive is an option for you (it's alot of work to back up everything, and it's just nervewracking to boot....well, at least the first time you do it), and your nervous about it, I would suggest you protect yourself as I did. When I initialized my system drive (it's 30Gb), I partitioned it into three 10Gb partitions (after you partition your drive, you can initialize the partitions individually). I then installed OS 9.0.4 on two partitions (the third is to back up my external firewire drive). I only upgraded one of them, so in case I had a problem I could always use the second partition as a 9.0.4 startup disk. Once I got to 9.2.2, reinstalled all my third party stuff (like PTLE) and was comfortable with it all, I reinitialized the second OS9 partition and installed OSX (in preparation for PTLE 6.0....I have a dual proccessor!). OSx is good to have too....It's nice and a lot more fun than OS9. I find that for PT I startup on the OS9 disk, and for other general email and internet stuff I boot up on OSx. So far, it's been superb.

BTW...Where is good people...he helped me out a couple of times, and I trust his advice.

Hope this is helpful,

Im running Protools LE 5.1 on OS 9.1 and everythig is working just fine. Today was the 1st time that my Mac ran out of juice (working on an albumr for a client) and yeah 'audiosuite' rules in that scenario LOL:).

Ive decided to stick with 9.1 only because it's behaving itself and I don't want to screw up anything just for the sake of an upgrade.

When Protools 6.0 is out on OSX then I will take the plunge in that direction but ONLY after ive sat back and taken note of how well it is behaving. Until then, OS 9.1 is the go for me!

The thing I love about DUC is that you guys actually take the time to reply. Even on a relatively unexciting topic such as this one!
Thanks for the advice, I think I'll go for it and see what happens!

Do I to have intialize the system drive to upgrade the OS or can I do it without this process?? Suppose I could always copy stuff to my other drive?

Thanks for all the advice.
