I do it.

Single 2.8 Mac Pro 3,1 with HD Native card and UAD cards.

Without the UAD cards, mixing would be impossible, but it works for me.

That's a dual machine so it'll be better than what I've got.

You'll need RAM.

It all comes down to what you need it to do and how much he wants.

Could be a deal, could be a dead end for you. We need more info. Tell us about your productions in terms of track count, VI use etc.

I used one up until about two months ago. Worked fine for me. It was an 8 core 2.8 with 12 GB. It got bogged down on some of my larger sessions, but for the most part was a champ. This was at lower sample rates, though. It couldn't really handle large sessions at 88 or 96.

It works perfectly w/ PT10 and 11.

And it's funny that you mention this. I had my checkbook out, willing to spend the $5K to get into a new trashcan Mac, and the deeper I looked into the issue the more I realized that I could probably do more, for less, by just tweaking my current 3,1 MacPro.

And that's what I did. I jumped from 8GB of ram to 16, which helped create some breathing room, but far and away the biggest upgrade I made was in swapping that slow spinning plater called "Internal HD" to an SSD. Since these two upgrades, at a fraction of the price of a new MacPro, I've noticed significant leaps in performance and "feel." Today, I feel no need whatsoever to upgrade this 6-year-old machine.

Also, just going through the computer and getting rid of waste, and perhaps optimizing your workflow (how audio, video, samples, etc. are handled) can increase performance without doing another thing.

Your machine is (probably) capable of doing just about anything you'd ask of it (depending on what you're doing, which I know nothing about).

Up until Feb of this year, I had 2 MP 3.1 machines, both working in different studios - 1 system for radio production and the other music and midi - both spec'd the same. I recently replaced 1 (radio station) with a new Mac Pro, the other machine is still in use and running fine even under heavier loads, the only issue I've had is in Logic 9 rather than PT11 and this simply a 32 bit app running low on memory when I ramp up the memory hungry VI's!
As suggested, you'll probably benefit from more ram and an SSD but overall, this ancient (in dog years:roll eyes:) machine runs a dream and has never missed a beat in PT11... and yes, I do all my midi work in Logic and mix in PT - horses for courses.

Good luck.

6 GB RAM probably won't do much for you. Up that to 12 or (if possible) 16.

I've had this concern as well. Which OSX are you all on? Which version of PT are you using? I seem to not be able to run the latest greatest PT, which also doesn't allow me to use Space AAX. (It doesn't see my license on my iLok.)

I'd love to be able to upgrade to at least Mtn Lion if not mavericks, and whatever the latest version of PT is, and then get my Space AAX to work.
