Default 002 vs 003

I'm thinking about purchasing a used 002 Desktop Unit with motorized fader, since the girl selling it upgraded 003 on her new G5.

003 Prace Tag ranges from $1200 - $2400+

002 Price Tag (used) ranges from $600-$1200+

Would I have any issues using 002 on a 7.4 > Upgrade > PT8 system? (As i'm sure 003 is naively compatible to PT8)

Can I use both 002 AND MBOX at the same time?

besides the cosmetics and price tag, whats the difference between the 002 and 003 ?

Is 003 really worth the $600+ price difference?
(note I hardly ever record more than 4 tracks at the same time as it is, and got 48x8bus analog consoles bussed into my M BOX and Secondary Interface, for recording, though I find 002 faders, mute control, and transport appealing, as my current transport/controller is QWERTY, Mouse and MIDI keyboards)

Thanks!

like 002 Rack vs 003 Rack, 002 Desktop vs 003 Desktop, etc)

The 2 unit are very close in sound and features and both are fully supported in 8.0. From what I understand the main reason behind switching from the 002 to the 003 was that the 002 was not ROHS complient.

I own both and I think the 003 sounds a little cleaner and more transparent then the 002 but its not a dramatic difference.

Plenty of used 003's out there also.

Here's what Black Lion Audio had to say about the difference between the 002 and 003 back in January 2008:
Quote:
We frequently get asked if the 003 is better than the 002, and while it does offer some improvements, we feel it's also inferior in certain respects. According to an email we received from Digidesign's engineering department, Digi has utilized the HD system's internal clock in the 003, and improved the power supply as well. The 003 also appears to be compliant with the European Union's new lead-free directives for electronic equipment, whereas the 002 is not. Conversion is handled by Cirrus Logic, which is a change from the AKM-based conversion found in the 002. The A/D uses the CS5361, a 115dB D/R A/D which is pin-compatible with Cirrus Logic's flagship CS5381 A/D. We consider this an improvement over the 002 because it offers higher dynamic range than the 002's A/D. The D/A is handled by the CS4392, which we felt was inferior to the 002's D/A. The 003's analog stage headroom is increased over the 002 by 15dB due largely to higher analog stage power supply voltage. For the 003's analog section, Digi uses Texas Instruments NE5532, which is a change from the analog stages found in the 002.

"003 has a better power supply and about +15Dbu more Headroom than the 002" would have sufficed.

Incidentally, either of them will work with 7.xx and 8.xx versions of Pro Tools. the 003's were introduced BEFORE Pt8.

One of the single biggest reasons to grab a 003 over the 002 is the fact that it has wordclock which can greatly simplify things when its time to expand your system.

The main reasons I got the 003 over the 002 was that it has two headphone outs, which is important since I don't have a vocal booth. Secondly, the 003 has balanced 1/4" connections for the Aux input, while the 002 uses unbalanced RCA connections, which does do well for what I use the Aux for.
