Default for those running G5 w/2 displays...advice!

I am working on some bigger mixes and I would like to upgrade my lovely 15" Viewsonic LCD. It's served well for 5 years but now I'd like a better workflow.

I'd like to get (2) 19" widescreens for use with myu G5 dual 2.0 ghz (circa 2004). I have one monitor connected via VGA to DVI adapter that the Mac came with. But the other port is ADC I guess. There's all kinds of products out there, from $40 to $400 to connect a VGA monitor to the ADC port.

What are you folks using? What's the easiest/most cost effective solution for hooking up the 2 displays. And, as important, have you found any adapters or solutions that DO NOT work as advertised? I don't want to get the $40 adapter if I need the $400 box and vice versa.

Thanks!
Brian

Hi,

The $40 one will work fine, its just pin to pin exchange. i do exactly what you are going to do,i have 2 19" displays. only caveat is the new screen memory features in 7.3 don't work when the session window is expanded across 2 monitors.

Rather than 2 x 19" monitors. . . my personal preference is as big main monitor (Dell 24" in my case) as you can afford and second smaller monitor (15-20"). I use the main monitor to alternate views of the Edit or Mix window, and the smaller monitor has my memory/markers and key plugins, which leaves the main monitor unobscured.

Sounds like the new 7.3 feature doesn't support recalling window arrangement for 2 monitors. . . that's a drag.

I'm running two Apple 23" cinemas and LOVE the workspace. Because of how they're built, it also gives me a little extra room on the desk.

If I remember, I paid around $60 for my ADC->DVI adapter (both Cinemas are DVI input).

Seems that no one carries the ADC to VGA connector anymore. Anywhere.

I might have to get creative. Possibly convert one of the VGA signals to DVI, then convert the DVI to ADC. yikes.

I run a 2005 era G5 (last of the PCI X - pre PCIe) with 2 x NEC 19" monitors and 2 x NEC 17" monitors. Apple adaptors from DVI to VGA (I guess the older G5 has the ADC) - then 6' VGA cables to 2 Xtend It vga boxes as my monitors are about 30' away from the CPU and then long VGA cables to each monitor. Works great and the NEC are lovely monitors. My beef with Apple Cinema displays is the external power supply and I believe there is a limit on the length of cable one can use. NEC monitors (most of them) have a VGA input and an IEC power input - very simple!
I just prefer to work with Mix window on one and Edit window on the other.
