Default Re: Internal SATA or Fire Wire drives for PT?

Internal Sata is the way to go. Especially with 3 additional drive bays in the Mac Pro's.

My current HD3/ PCIe is on a G5 which only allows 1 additional drive and haven't had any problems with the SATA's @ 7200 RPM and will swap em for various projects. I did have hiccups using my portable LE 002R rig w/ external firewire and Oxford 911/922 chipset drives.

I hope to be getting this soon for backing up/cloning etc. and will test to see if it will handle using it as an audio recording drive/s.

Very cost effective, no trays to install, slides in and out and has Oxford 924 chipset.

Hotswap and Hot-Plug SATA II Mobile Bays with Fan and Hard Drive Activity LED

Comes with Firewire 400, Firewire 800 and USB2 cables

Compatible with any computer with Firewire or USB port

Platform non-specific - Works with any OS

DBAQS-1394-USB Sale price: 219.98 (*they also offer eSATA connectivity for $30.00 less*)

I've been using this IcyDock external Case ($60.00) for single Sata Drives
for backup and recording with no problems. With no fan, I've left it on and used it as a record/playback drive in test mode for hours with no hiccups whatsoever and the case was not hot at all. The LED is bright and used a Sharpie to dim it, lol.
The only downside which isn't that major is you have to mount it to a tray using 4 screws. No biggie but very cost effective.

there is a $15.00 rebate offer now

Hope this helps

7200 RPM drives for the most part are plenty fast enough for most Pro Tools users. Only if you have the most demanding sessions in terms of track counts, edits, high sample rate, etc. do you need to go with the higher speed, more expensive drives.

Hey, I'm looking at getting my first internal SATA 1 TB as my work drive. I can't find any of those who have their specs listed in RPM, like the old days with the 7200 RPM minimum...Is it b/c SATA drives are so fast now that this stat is meaningless? Is simply mentioning a 3 Gb/s transfer rate imply a greater speed than 7200 RPM...forgive me, I just upgraded from a 7-year old MixPlus system, so I'm a bit rusty on HD specs. Is there any spec/stat I should be mindful if buying a SATA?

There are some "green" 1TB drives out there that aren't 7200 RPM.

I use internal SATA, but heat can sometimes be an issue. My studio isn't air-conditioned, so when I am cutting acoustic instruments in the summer the heat buildup can turn the computer's fans up .... noise in the cr.

It's not a huge issue, but I think limiting the drive speed to 7200 might be a good idea. Newer drives are likely to be more energy (and therefore heat) efficient.

Best...H
