Default Smart Tool Problems PT 5 Sawtooth

Often find that the smart tool won't change from trimmer to grabber to time range etc.

Also have problems when using trimmer out of smart mode it will trim sometimes in the opposite direction it is facing......

Anyone else experience this ?

yeah, that's why I've started referring to the smart tool as the not-so-smart tool -- it doesn't always seem to recognize exactly where it is within the region, which is especially annoying because it just cost you as much time as you saved on the last 10 edits using the darn thing.

but, like an idiot, I keep using it because I keep thinking how useful it would be if it worked.

Smart Tool performance can also be affected by the zoom resolution. If you are zoomed out the performance could be poor. Especially, if you are having problems with the direction of the trim tool.

What I do to get around it is to take advantage of the zoom chicklets (the 1 thru 5 buttons in upper left hand corner of the screen. Set any one of them to a zoom level that works will with Smart Tool and just hit when you are about to edit some audio.

Also, if the Trim Tool is facing the wrong direction the option key will turn it around.

thanks for the affirmation, NuBus -- it's good not to be alone.

And thanks to Jon for responding. I understand what you're saying about the zoom resolution, but I've had situations where I'm zoomed in fairly tight on a region and the "smart" tool is apparently stuck on one tool and won't change no matter where I put it over the region. I've tried zooming in and out, moving the mouse off the region and then back on, etc, etc and the only way to get the darn thing working again has been to change tools.

Yes this happens quite often where it is no tool at all. I am getting used to reselecting the smart tool and then it reappears for me.

It's the "now you see it, now you don't, smart tool.

Maybe it's called the smart tool because if you're smart, you don't use it !

Thanks for the posts, looking forward to the fix, and to be fair, the edit facilities of Pro Tools are much more advanced than my last sequencer/editor

Not alone at all guys! I Know five people that are not smart enough to stop using the smart tool (ME TOO). Why complain? We don´t have to use all the software features

Hey don't get me wrong, the smart tool is one of the coolest features of V5, it just needs to be fixed a bit.
