Default HD-n with 16x16

So I was planning on getting this unit in about 3-6 months time frame. I'm looking at building out a room to house all things music. .(35x20x14 ish fwiw)

Question is I am running a LS56 now and have access to 8 more inputs which seems like it would work but I plan on using a console for the room (a API 1608 would be awesome, but probably something like a Audient 4816 eventually)

I have a soundcraft series 2 board (more suited for live yes but has direct outs 36 of 'em and 8 subgroups outs and will work for now)

So question is...do I need this HD-n and 16x16? Or should I just get several killer pre's and a great mic or two?

I have low latency monitoring via software (Focusrite) but I will be monitoring via the console so the HD-n is not the selling point.

Disk cache is awesome (currently using it on PT10) / but I am
Looking for some more input and ideas that I am not considering

Not really working at all in PT11 most of the sessions I have started PT10 and it's doing the job really well.

Anyway that's about it thanks guys

Default HD-n with 16x16

For perspective

HD-n with 16x16 cross grade
$5500.00

API Lunchbox with
512c mic pre
527 comp
550b eq

Vintech x73i with powersupply

$5700.00 most likely less via the dealer.

If you like the sound of the console, why not jump into the HDN now?

Default HD-n with 16x16

Time frame is for buildout of the room. I'm also trying to move my household - so yeah I could get it now, just curious about the converters versus 192's and if anything would be lost just staying native besides losing disk cache which is awesome

(Focusrite with 16 or possibly 24 inputs)

Just trying to sound out my situation, and see if I might be missing something.

I suppose I could jump in now but I am curious when PT12 will happen. Since I am a man of humble means $1000 to upgrade HD versions would be better spent elsewhere, so why not wait and see PT12 drop

My best guess is that we'll see PT12 in October at AES. It's remotely possible that they could announce it next week at NAB (I would at least wait until then), but unlikely.

Traditionally, they've gone a year and a half to 2 years between versions. The main exception was the short 1 year between 9 and 10. AES this year will be a year and a half from PT11 at last year's NAB. And for the last several versions, it's been one of those two events they announced at, regardless.

My guess (and I have no inside knowledge) is that we'll see a few .x versions of 11 still to come before we see 12.

Whole number versions are usually reserved for MAJOR changes and with 11 being a major change, not sure what it would take to go to 12 soon.

Avid touted how many of the IdeaScale requests it took care of with 11, so that might serve as a rough guide of what to expect next.

My guess is Track Presets and Clip Bins/Folders.

You can also look at the fact that 11 was geared towards Post with all the new meters etc. Avid historically pivots from one set of users to another with their attention. Not really sure who's next!

I use an Ls40 at my bands rehearsal spot and have an HDN and 16x16 for my personal. There is quite a large difference between the 2. Not only in conversion quality, but integration. The perceived latency is far less w an HDN and the benefits of HDN software and specifically individual track input monitoring is huge. Not having to deal with the Focusrite control software is another bonus!

11 is quite young. It is still at 11.1.x I have a feeling it will be the better part of year or so before 12 arrives.

This is great info, track monitoring is cool, I think disk cache is the best keeps those drives from under running themselves

That is what I was feeling as well, that coupled with the fact that the roll out was slow, could mean that's it's going to be here longer than other releases. Idk

As cool as the LS56 is, if you plan to add a console into the setup, I suspect you may NEED the lower latency of HDN

Sometimes it's hard to predict. 9 to 10 was a whole number upgrade, in just 1 year, and the main things we got were clip gain, disk cache, and the Avid Channel Strip. Oh, and a firestorm about their huge price increases.

My guess is that PT12 will be music oriented, perhaps new Midi features and VI's, since that hasn't been updated since PT8.
