Your problem (the need for more inputs) is easily solved with the addition of another eight input A/D device (plugs into the ADAT interface on the 001 card). In the 001 video they used a piece from Presonus. Presonus has a newer one called the Digimax with 8 pre-amps included (so you don't need a mixer - you plug the mikes into the Digimax).
There are other low cost A/D devices out there; some with pre's and some without. You can actually get 18 inputs into PTLE by using something like the Digimax into the ADAT interface and another A/D device plugged into the S/PDIF input.
