Default Explanation for FORMANT shift in Time Shift Plug In, please!

I understand the concept of formant as being the harmonic content envelope of a given sound sample. Further, if you shift the fundamental frequency AND the formant envelope equally, you'll get a rather unrealistic pitch shift so the original formant should be preserved (unless you're going for a completely different tonality).

Can someone provide an explanation of how the formant control on the Time Shift plug in should be set if one wishes to do 3,5,7 semi-tone pitch shifts etc.?

I think many users might find this helpful.
