Default Sound Library Inquiries.

Hello,

I work in post-production audio for film and therefore I have large amounts of sound effects that I keep on a single harddrive. When I call upon effects in the drive, sometimes it takes a moment for me to audition them in the workspace environment. My first question is as follows:

Is there a way (other than creating audiowaveforms and digidatabases) that I can maximize the speed of auditioning files from an external harddrive?

Furthermore, I work with several other individuals and we frequently move this 'master effects drive' around from computer to computer when we work. Since this isn't the most efficient way to work, we were either thinking of making several 'master' drives - one for each of us, or to put the drive on the network. We hope to do the latter, however, from what we have tried, accessing/auditioning sounds over the network is incredibly slow. My next question is:

Is there anything that I can do to allow me to network my drive and not have the outcome so slow?

Any suggestions will be helpful. Thank you.
