You are adjusting the Q bandwidth of the eq band. I am also on 2022.12 and did what you did with the same results. However if you boost or cut the track several db then try the Q adjustment you can see it. EQIII doesn't show any Q adjustments if there is no gain adjustment it looks like. I also automated the gain and Q of the EQIII plug in without any issues and the automation played back correctly.
