Whether you're actually losing quality by downsampling to 48kHz, or gaining any by recording at 96kHz in the first place is a matter of opinion. It IS a fact that when you downsample to 48kHz, you will lose any information contained in that upper frequency octave. It is also a fact that once you've done that, going back up to 96kHz would be simply pointless.
