FWIW, due to the architecture, the performance of 768 recorded tracks from the same source ought to be the same as 768 tracks from different sources (you'd have a hard time coming up with that many sources, but you could do something clever with aux tracks and bus sends). All 256 streams are always running from all the cards, and the routing is done on the cards, so recording 768 tracks, even from the same source, really is streaming 768 channels at a time (and they're streaming all the time, even when not recording).
Also, silence vs real signal ought not make a difference.
It can indeed play 768 tracks all at once.
