MacOS has a feature called "Time Machine" that takes periodic snapshots of your system and files. Of course you need to have setup the process for it to be active. This is probably a good time to learn that making backups is important with any computer system. While time machine and other similar backup systems are useful, a true backup plan should be part of standard operating procedures with any computer. And no system is backed up until it is backed up twice (or more) and the restore media is kept at a remote location to protect you from physical damage such as from fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane, etc. Search "disaster recovery" to get an idea of an effective back up plan.
