Is this really a problem?

I am not having problems on my machines running 10.5.3 that are all configured with their default post-leopard install networking settings

when I look at Network in System Preferences, it lists Built-in FireWire and says not connected

but there is no disable button.

I want to understand why this is a problem and if it's a big problem, why there isn't a big red flag note to users about this during installation?
