I also think that nobody is being snappy. Adjusting levels for every song is the most basic part of "mixing". Keeping knobs consistent actually is fairly easy if you adhere to a target level for everything you record(which is what experienced engineers do). Using Clip Gain is a perfectly viable solution, so I'm not sure why you are reluctant to at least try it. Normalize may also work fine for you, but having tried it many times, I prefer Clip Gain(but maybe 35 years of experience is the reason). There is lots of great info throughout this thread so maybe give it another read through and experiment with all the ideas offered to find what works best for you.
