I am not sure what your gear is without searching but this is the rule of thumb:
You have MIDI out and MIDI thru along with MIDI in. Sometimes it is switchable inside the box, sometimes outside, sometimes you don't have the option. Just think of this logically with the above in mind. If you need to split the MIDI, things get more complicated.
