As you pointed out yourself; when using a Lacie disk, everything runs fine!
It's a DAE error, which has something to do with the harddisk read and write speed (HDD bus load).
So, it's probably a controller issue from the external disk.
I've encountered those a lot in my previous job. Normally I would have it send back for repair and they usually replace the controller (the casing with it's connections).
Notice: you need to back-up the disk before sending, as they usually format the drive after repair for a check they do at the end.
