It depends. Primarily I assume it's a shortcoming of the software that governs the forums here. I've had similar problems with messages that I knew I'd posted but couldn't find unless I did a search. Whatever the reason, I never seem to have this issue on other forums I visit.
At the same time, other users have commented that their posts have been deleted occasionally, so there appears to be some active censorship applied from time to time. One of mine disappeared once upon a time...though I have to admit it was decidedly quite off-topic.
