That sounds more like Avid? They give you free plugins, but then take them back after 12 months unless you pay them a premium to keep 'em.
I have gotten a bunch of free waves plugins over the last few years. Never paid a cent for them... Beats a kick in the nuts, but I pass no judgement if you prefer a hefty boot in the ol' swing bag.
