I have PT 8 with no updates of any kind and have no issues. I've had previous versions of PT and will strongly disagree that 8 has more issues than any version of 7. If you're having issues, I doubt it's PT that's at fault.
And to answer the question, no, Digi stopped selling 7.4.2 once 8.0 came out.
