Dolby Stereo is a four channel matrix system which (this is very, very simplified) works this way: it derives center and surround information from both Lt and Rt tracks (these are master Left and Right). If a signal is recorded on both tracks, and the phase between these two is 0, then it will be decoded to center. If the signals on Lt and Rt are same level, but out of phase for 180, it will be decoded as surround.
Consequently, you may conclude that your stereo mix either has a lot of out-of-phase information (e.g. reverbs, string pads, etc.), or there is a major phase problem between L and R. Check for these two cases before trying anything else.
