OK, I see... So I've now created a blank session and done "import session data", copying everything. I'm pleased (and a bit surprised) that everything's there.
So far, this new session has been up for 30 minutes and hasn't frozen yet. If it lasts the day I'll consider it fixed and get on with editing it.
