It's usually installed at the same time as protools, but if you really don't want to install PT, I'm pretty sure you can choose to only install core audio from the installer. When that's done, start up Logic (or whatever else you want to use), go to the preferences, and choose your 003R+ from the devices available. this should start up the Core Audio program, and you're sweet to go.
It definitely works (i've done it many times), so don't give up on it if you can't find the right option or preferences straight away...
