Assuming the rules are the same in the US as they are in the UK. DSL loses signal the longer the cable run particularly after leaving the 'main' socket.
While the same is true of ethernet the effect is much less pronounced over a shortish run. From memory deterioration begins after 500ft for ethernet and about 50ft for DSL. It's been a long time since I've had to know the actual figures though so may be wrong.
