Default Phantom Automation Points...arg!

Sometimes when I go to adjust a fader or pan knob on a track, it snaps back as if there is automation on it (when I have not intended to set any automation).

I know I can turn the channel's AUTO to Off, but I want to understand how/why this is happening in the first place. I have to go to the Volume track view and select the whole track (with zero automation points in it) and hit delete, and then to the pan view, select the whole track and hit delete and then the pan knob will be freed from it's automation prison.

This is frustrating and I know it's my human error, but don't understand it.
