I use Time Machine for my system and internal SSD system info only. If I do a restore I don’t restore the applications, only the user prefs and info. I’ll then manually re-install all of the applications.
Another option is to use Carbon Copy Cloner

I also backup important files to the cloud regularly. That way I know I can always replace them if I need to do a full wipe and clean install of the OS
