Default Re: Samsung 970 EVO...

Just set up my 2010 Mac Pro to boot off a Samsung 1 TB 970 Pro NVMe card. Used an inexpensive PCIe 4 lane adapter card with a heat sink plugged into the MP's 4 land slot. Adapter and heat sink was only $25.

NVMe booting in a cMP works with Mojave 14.6 (maybe Mojave 14.4, too). Updated the graphics card so I could load Mojave: added an 8GB Radeon Sapphire Pulse RX580 with the Macvidcards boot ROM flash.

The PCIe version 2 limits the performance to +/- 1,400, half of what the newer PCIe3 slots can do. But still about three times faster than a SATA SSD in a PCIe accelerator card and six times faster than an SSD in one of the four 3Gbps HDD bays.
