Re: Mac Pro 2013: Big Sur vs Montery?

What problem are you trying to solve by upgrading?

Any restrictions on what macOS versions you need to run? Plugin compatibility only you can tell.

If there is not a pressing problem, since...

Re: External SSD boot drive for OS and Pro Tools?

I boot a MBP from fast external SSD all the time, to work with multiple boot OS images. But especially if a laptop I'd want my primary boot drive to be internal.

You don't give much useful enough...

Re: where is the VU meter plug in?

Was going to say the same thing. This not uncommon confusion happens because yes internally it's measuring voltage, but the whole thing is put together to represent perceived volume and VU definitely...

Re: Cloud question

No. And maybe you should have listened to all the advice here from folks and not be using Avid Link. You can uninstall that along with the cloud collaboration bloatware.

Re: Merge two owned Avid accounts

Have you checked to see if you can just move any iLok licenses? (i.e. they are marked transferable in ILM). Would that achieve what you want?

Re: Recorded tracks delayed

So if your H/W buffer is 256 samples you are likely just seeing that. What is not making sense is you say that the offset/latency happens on playback but not while tracking and that you are using...

Re: Recorded tracks delayed

Nothing here is making sense. Changing the buffer size should not just make any latency problem totally go away, it might reduce latency. Maybe if you have some whacky signal routing, but otherwise...

Re: Recorded tracks delayed

100-150ms... no come on you need to measure this exactly in Pro Tools, measuring the difference between waveforms in number of samples as accurately as you can, and tell us the sample rate. I already...

Unless you have been paying for software support/updates any recent version of Pro Tools will not work with your license. Wether you upgraded your perpetual license or switched to a subscription...

Re: Recorded tracks delayed

Delayed relative to what exactly? What exactly are you recording and exactly are you measuring?

What *exact* delay… in samples and what sample rate. Often the exact delay in samples gives a good...

Re: Mac Studio config - help needed

Uh what interface are you running? Your profile says Mbox 3. If that is correct, there are no drivers for that on Apple silicon. So you will need to purchase a new interface. There are lots of great...

WHERE IS ANY OF THE EXPECTED INFO ABOUT YOUR SETUP AND SYSTEM?

DID YOU DO WHAT IS EXPECTED AND SEARCH FOR INFO ABOUT THIS BEFORE POSTING?

Re: Maximising CPU Efficiency with Pro Tools?

No.

No. CPUs live in your computer, not the interface. The quality of the interface driver however can make a large difference to the overall stability of the system.

Re: m1 running HD for post, 32 or 64gb ram?

There is nothing at all like NAND SSD wear that happens with DRAM, that's wear free technology. And DRAM's dynamic refresh means it's having it's contents rewritten on memory refresh cycles. If it...

Re: m1 running HD for post, 32 or 64gb ram?

While this is a start, unfortunately with modern demand paged operating systems like macOS this does not show you what applications actually need. A system with physically lots of memory will tend to...

You have a completely clueless understanding of how a computer works. But don’t let that stop you providing advice here. Embarrassing.

Re: m1 running HD for post, 32 or 64gb ram?

No. Who is this magical they? Can you explain the tests you have done that show this. If you could explain how you factored in the demand paging, and memory compression behavior, on both systems that...

Re: Waveform unable to display above 0dbfs 32bit clips correctly?

Farhoof - thanks for letting us know about this. Great info, I was unaware of the noise burst stupidity but had noticed the Pro Tools screwing up signals at what turns out to be ~ +20dBFS.

Ivan -...

Re: m1 running HD for post, 32 or 64gb ram?

Nobody here can say for sure if you *need* it. And it's hard to quickly even tell how much memory your current systems needs to run your current workloads, well not without doing some tests. (unless...

Re: PT mixer headroom severely reduced to 20dB over 0dBFS. Bug?

Thanks for pointing this out, seems a silly thing for Avid to have done. "Hey we've got a 64-bit mixer and 32-bit float file support but we'll just throw away all that dynamic range... discarding...

Re: PT mixer headroom severely reduced to 20dB over 0dBFS. Bug?

Have you seen if this actually helps with the noise problems you were having? At least from Avid's description this does not seem to make a lot of sense, or is not really explained well. If it's just...

Re: Waveform unable to display above 0dbfs 32bit clips correctly?

I'm using 2022.10. But all versions I've seen recently behave the same and may have done so for a long time.

No idea about Noise Burst Peak Protection, never heard of it or played with it.

Re: Waveform unable to display above 0dbfs 32bit clips correctly?

For example here is a clip created from the signal generator of a sine wave at 0dBFS output. Then recorded to a track/clip and then clip gain at maximum and recorded to another track/clip. It's just...

Re: Waveform unable to display above 0dbfs 32bit clips correctly?

What Pro Tools does with > 0dB signal levels potentially varies even if it claims to support 32 bit files and 64-bit mixing. Pro Tools will display a "clipped" signal in the UI in many cases without...
