M/S Technique might yield great results if you are looking for a "this sounds like it is everywhere" sound...it is mono compatible, the sides cancel out in mono and you still got the center...

Summary of my problem: Since I connected S/p dif to my 001, my Outputs aren't working anymore like they should. Instead, everything sounds MONO, and the Pan seems to regulate my levels...all the way...

I really don't think you can insert it into a channel as post fader, at least not in the "inserts" area, because it is an insert...in this particular case you are wanting to automate how much goes...
