Beyond the legality as far as jailbreaking goes on things like cell phones it also voids the warranty IIRC.

Building such a Mac may not be illegal but using Apple software to run it as a Mac IS illegal in the US. Or didn't you read the first article Manny linked to?

There is no such thing as a legal Hackintosh and having a sticker on a case means nothing. I still submit that system you're running is the problem and you can't expect for Avid to have any sympathy...
