4.1 is the oldest mac this can be done too. Unfortunately there's no way of having thunderbolt but USB3 is possible.

Thanks for the reply Top Jimmy. It seems that moving from 8 to 12 isn't much of a problem but the other way around is. Anyway I did as you suggested and made a note of the settings.
