So I think I just figured this out. I clicked:
<Setup>
<Playback Engine>
and at the top of that page there are choices for any of my interfaces, or
"Built-in Output" or "Built-in Microphone"....

Hi Darryl, sorry re document "error"/"assert"... you're correct.
I've been trying to use an MBOX 3, MBox Pro 3, and Apogee ONE; all very valid, with output.

Thanks Dave. I found and downloaded several older Focusrite drivers, and managed to get the Scarlett to work. Kind of.
The Mac's "Audio Devices" sees the "Scarlett 18i20 USB" device, and...

Thanks Dave. Yeah, the problem is that the Focusrite drivers won't install on my OSX 10.8.5, and my PT v10 won't run on a newer OSX. (I'm not trying to run the Focusrite AND the Mbox concurrently)....

BTW, before I got this FW400 vs 800 issue figured out, my system ran much better, perfectly actually, using JUST my Powerbook's internal drive, which surprised me.

AND the external drive CANNOT be FireWire-800 if it's on the same FW buss as the MBox Pro, which is FW-400 only. There's no FW power coming out the ports of the MBoxes either, BTW.

So I went to Apple and bought a Thunderbolt-to-FW800 connector, and set up my rig with the FW800...

After beating my head against the wall for a week with 6085 errors I finally discovered that the MBox Pro gen3 is NOT FW800 compatible! FW400 works fine. Also the FW ports on the back of the MBox...

Got a surprisingly quick response back from AVID support, confirming what I had suspected: FireWire-800 drives DO NOT work with the MBox Pro, or the other Gen-3 MBoxes, although for years mine worked...

Sorry, my fault. I was thinking decimals, as per the above posts. The laptop's problem turned out to be that one of the two 1GB RAM chips went bad. Should be rock solid again...
