Turning conductor track off allows you to play at a manually entered tempo without destroying your tempo map - sometimes necessary. Also allows tap-tempo function.

Two things: Lock the clip(s): cmd-L. Also, a clip won't move with tempo changes if the track is in Samples mode (vs Ticks mode).
