I second that!!! In any analogue studio you don't have to plug mics in to make inserts work and ProTools should be the same! I sent literally DAYS figuring that out, and there is no reference to this...

DSI (Digi system init) 5.1 (available for d/l) and DAE 5.0.1 (not 5.1 - PT 5.0.1 won't work with it) seems to be the work around you are looking for. Good luck!
