Does the same old trick work with the S3 that works with the D-Command and D-Control? Their displays are just socketed similar to ICs. Given them a firm press down often brings faded or 'dying' ones...

That is generally expected behaviour. There are two types of EuCon surface. The smaller stuff uses EuControl and has some limited HUI functionality. It is very rough compared to proper EuCon support...
