Re: Last thing I need is the Microphone

Yep, save your cash. You can do better than the KSM32, without going Neumann. Maybe try a Rode NTK. But I've gotten professional results with that cheap MXL. Of course it helps knowing how to...

Re: Creating depth in a mix

I guess I'm more conservative! :)

Usually, kick, snare, bass, and lead vox are center. Cymbals can get very wide using a spaced pair for overheads (hi-hat/crash can be almost all the way right,...

Re: Master Plug-in Chain

Nope, PTLE is 32-bit float.

I've never trusted statements like this.

Re: Master Plug-in Chain

YESSS!!! I do "mastering" for literally every project that I do (who doesn't want a radio-friendly mix?). Of course I can't get things quite as loud, but it's close enough that no one has EVER...

Re: Snare drum recommendations needed!

A trick I like is to use pitch shift to de-tune the snare track by one octave or so. Then, gate, compress, and EQ so it sounds warm and beefy, and sneak it back in parallel with the original snare...

Re: MESH Vocals? Advice needed..!

Always happy to help when someone posts their mix! Makes being of help much easier. ;)

LPF = Low Pass Filter = most everything above a certain frequency is gone. Look hard at the Digi delay plug!

Re: Live Recording

The direct outputs on some mixing consoles are post fader (and possibly post-EQ). I know that some A&H boards are like this. So, it you connect the direct out to your 003 and the soundguy pushes up...

Re: DAE error - 9131

Partitioning isn't necessary, nor advised.

Just taking a shot here, but... in the workspace browser, is the partition in question specified as "R"?

Backup all the data in that whole drive to...

Re: MESH Vocals? Advice needed..!

Right away, the vocals sound a little too loud in the mix. You could bring the vocal down.

Compression will allow the vocal to remain intelligible when it's lower in the mix, but it won't...

Re: PreSonus Monitor Station = Questions

Ah you're right. I think I knew that, but never needed that many. Carry on.

Re: PreSonus Monitor Station = Questions

Well, that is the proper way to set up individual cue mixes within PT. Each track has 5 sends, so it's possible to set up 5 different cue mixes within the software, in addition to the monitor mix. ...

Re: how much does an external clock makes a diffarence on 002r conversion ?

This is the subject of much debate recently. Here's my take on the current wisdom:

Clocking internally is usually the best route, since the circuits that detect the clock signal from outside...

Re: Advice for audiobook production?

You're welcome. To further whet your gear lust, UA makes a combination 610 preamp with an LA-2A compressor in the same rackmount box. A local film and post house near me has two of them for their...

Re: how to make voice sound cuter

Um, there is free software within PT called Pitch Shift. It's not a real-time effect, but it doesn't sound like you need such a thing anyways. The Pitch Shift plug-in can be found under the...

Re: Advice for audiobook production?

Nilsk is on the right track, but I think it's important you know that the UA Solo 610 or 710 will NOT get you that sound, just like the "Elvis mic" won't get you that famous slap-echo effect. The...

of clipping tracks (this is what "limiting" is about, literally, right?)
and 'Maxim' works as a 'booster' for NON-clipping...

Re: Suggestions for the making skiing gate SFX

Compared to skis scraping the snow and ice, I don't think you'd actually hear much of anything from the gate. But a golf course pin would work well because of the flag on top, flapping rapidly as it...

Kind of surprised no one's asking this... why on earth do you need in excess of 100 tracks? Can't anyone make a DECISION anymore? Even if you're using Reason or Live, get a good sounding loop and...

Re: Drum tracking question

If you have a stable setup for tracking 13 inputs at once, then my advice is to stay with that setup, unless you have money to burn. Import the files into PT for overdubbing and mixdown, and you'll...

This is the single most intelligent comment I've ever read on this topic. The mastering will follow the music. We can all relax. And if a couple jazz records get messed up along the way, well, so...

Re: Editing cymbals?

Removing the overheads changes the sound of the entire kit, because overhead mics CAPTURE the entire kit. If you REALLY REALLY want the drum sound to change, cool, but I hope there's an artistic...

Re: Stereo or Mono tracks and why???? All opinions needed

Well, most sources are mono (coming from one location), so it makes sense to record them that way; it's a more accurate representation.

But a string quartet, or a choir, or a piano, will have left...
