12 has some things that 10 doesn't, don't use VCAs at home an you should be OK

iLok is not platform specific, you can move between Windows and Mac easily
Sessions can be moved relative easily...

the other thing HDN/HDX cards let your run is a Sync HD for; SMPTE and other Time Code reading/generation, limited VSOing of the system and triggering Recording Lights

Welcome to the forum.

Do the laptops have dedicated graphics sub sytem or do they only have Intel Integrated Graphics? The latter is a known Pro Tools killer.

Pro Tools is very OS specific and you bought second hand w/o doing a Transfer of Ownership.
Had you done a TOO you would have the activation code in your account at Avid.com

on a Desktop machine I still recommend separate drives for each
on a Laptop OS/Samples on one, sessions on another
everything on 1 drive still makes me nervous and makes drive/data management a PITA

The OSX 10.7 error mean you put the new OS on your computer that PT 10 doesn't support. The installer is reading your OSX 10.10 or 10.11 as 10.1
