to answer my own question: I should have been highlighting the song. I was highlighting the track only. So the bounce was showing the length of the whole session.

I guess I didn't make myself clear. NONE of those buttons are available. My screen shot ends at the top of the tracks etc. There is NO way to choose anything! No toolbelt, markers, timeline...
