Yeah, I have the same problem, but I just end up using my 002R only with ProTools. If I try to use it with anything else I lose the firewire connection as you said. I never really got to the bottom...

You don't need to lose one insert per track. Just simply set up some aux tracks, with varying amounts of compansation, and then route the tracks you want compensated to these aux tracks...Job done. ...
