Yeah but it's not a modifier. You have to get back to normal trim and select the smart tool again when done

You can choose any key but not the normal modifier keys. Best to have it in the left hand so you reach other important keys without moving much. Cmd still works for slip/grid toggle even if your...

This is non latching momentarily. Press key and do your TCE while key is down and it returns to smart tool on release. Been using it for years :)

I have two keyboard maestro macros for this.
On hotkey trigger press: simulate keystroke F6 two times.
On hotkey trigger release: simulate keystroke F6 three times and Cmd+7.
