I'm sorry that I can't give you a solution for your problem, but I just thought that I'd add that I'm also experiencing this issue; albeit with the standard MBox 2.

Series is an option, but it would give a lower output level. I'd prefer to maintain the same output level or better it by running them in parallel, providing the headphone...

The only reason that Digidesign don't recommend daisy-chaining an external hard drive to the 002, is because the 002 has to be on for you to access your drive.

I can't comment on whether an 002/002R is plug and play from installing an MBox. But, an MBox is most certainly plug and play from installing an 002/002R. So, I'm fairly sure that the other way...
