Are you selecting some audio to preview? AS works on a per track basis. You have to select the audio you want to AudioSuite. As well, check what was already suggested.

Grab the manual too.

There is no latency to worry about in the analog world. An SSL's compressor will add zero latency(delay) to the chain. Mixing in Pro Tools, if you add a plugin compressor there will be a delay...

I believe it will measure a round trip through any devices in the chain. Pretty cool for digital FX units, which you would have to enter in a manual offset for in PT. It would be quicker patching...

That's pretty much how it's done. Some even do the automation in Pro Tools and put the SSL's faders at zero...pricey summing box!
