Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Update

Don't do it. I don't think anyone would suggest building an Opteron based PC these days. It's kind of a a dead end as far as ProTools is concerned because it requires (slower) registered memory.

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Update

I'm not Shan, but I can answer one of your questions. I don't think anyone should build a dual opteron system from scratch. My single i7 system is significantly faster than my dual quad core...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Update

I'm going from memory here but I think Tyan had it posted that the motherboard & BIOS only supported B3 and later. If that's true you're probably stuck.

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Update

If everything is working fine now Windows shouldn't require any changes or re-installation. Upgrade to the latest BIOS (& get all your BIOS settings into setup) while still using the old CPUs. If...

Tyan just posted a new BIOS version for the S2927A2NRF this morning. Here's the description:

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Update

Polf,

I'm using two #OS2350WAL4BGH quad cores in my S2927A2NRF board with no problem. I'm using BIOS version 2.02 downloaded from http://www.tyan.com/support_download_bios.aspx?model=S.S2927 . ...

I have the motherboard with firewire & audio. The original message in this thread will get you started. Save a backup for each step of the way - you'll be glad you did.

Re: Is this the first Opteron based OctaPC?

Bad1,

I'm using XP Pro and PT7.4cs3. I have not tried the 4GB/large address stuff yet. I don't use a lot of VIs, but may try it one day just to see how much difference it makes for plugin...

Re: Is this the first Opteron based OctaPC?

So far so good with the Opteron OctaPC. I chose to do the upgrade now because I don't have any projects going for the next couple of weeks. Mostly I have been calling up old mixes to see how they...

Is this the first Opteron based OctaPC?

I just finished replacing the 2 dual core processors in my Tyan S2927 with new Quad core "Barcelona" series Opterons. On advice from Tyan tech support, I updated to the 2.01f Beta version of the...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *OS Upd

There's a new BIOS version (http://www.tyan.com/support_download_bios.aspx?model=S.S2927) for the Tyan S2927 motherboard this week, too. The description says:

Thunder n3600B (S2927) BETA BIOS...

Re: so is AMD just a bad idea these days?

There's one other thing to consider. I had heard that the Intel quads and their memory were much higher wattage than their AMD counterparts. If that is true they would generate proportionately more...

Re: so is AMD just a bad idea these days?

The Opteron Quad Core (Barcelona) chips had a problem and AMD stopped production while the problem was corrected. The fixed "B3 stepping" chips are supposed to be available early second quarter...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core) *07-07-1

I have an Opteron quad based on the Tyan 2927 board. Because the list prices were so low on the quad CPUs, I had decided to try them to see how low I could get my latency while tracking through...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core)

For those of you with the Tyan/AMD quadzilla machines based on the S2927 motherboard, Tyan's website now shows these motherboards to be compatible with the Opteron Barcelona 2347 and 2350 quad core...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core)

I had asked Tyan Tech support about Barcelona support for the S2927 motherboard as well. They replied that they were still working on it. When I saw MrMan's post here, I sent tech support another...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core)

A new beta BIOS update has been posted on Tyan's site. No mention of quad cores, although I guess the new AGESA code could include that. Anybody tried it? Anybody plan to try it while beta? Any...

Re: Allenstein OctaPC(8-core) and Quadzilla(4-core)

Shane, would a BIOS update be needed from Tyan? Some of the info on AMD's website made it seem that the new quad would just drop in and run in any socket F motherboard set up for the dual core...

Re: octo-ready quad yet?

I didn't buy the parts all at once, so I don't have an exact price for you. I would guess it was around $1700-$1800. It's a big improvement over my previous P4/3GHz machine. I can't imagine that a...
