Re: Carbon losing communication

Chris - I haven't had this problem myself, but there have been a number of updates in PT and MacOS to address this.
While I'm not recommending you update from Catalina - my Mac Pro is staying on...

Re: Frequent crashes when working in the MIDI Editor window

Everyone on this thread should report this to Avid. There's really no point in chiming in with "me too" or "anyone fixed this?" beyond a certain number of posts.

Avid does fix stuff. Not always...

Re: CPU Temps and Intel Turbo Boost

Are you running MacOS 12.3.1 and do you have the Pro Tools video engine disabled? I would try those two things.

Re: Bad Practice

It's pretty usual for resellers to have licenses at lower prices than the vendor. I'm guessing this is to encourage people to ask pre-sales and post-sales questions from their local reseller.

As...

Re: Carbon Mon Main Noise

Nothing like that here, and I have a pretty sensitive monitoring setup.

Are you using TRS leads (rather than TS)? Any other ambient noise sources (flourescent lights etc)? Apologies if these are...

Re: The end of perpetual licenses

Perpetual users are whining because they know that they will be screwed in the future.

I think it's pretty scandalous that Avid delivered a late release (compared to previous release intervals)...

Re: MacPro7,1 USB-C to optical solution

Topping D10S if you want nice.
Behringer UCA202 / 222 if you want cheap. Limited to 48KHz, I think.

Or any RME interface if you want excellent drivers.

Re: Used Carbon hardware without software

I would argue that it's still not clear, and that Avid have tied themselves in knots with a very complex idea that they haven't thought through.

You get a license with Carbon, but it isn't...

Re: 10.8.5 Upgrade to 10.9.5 OSX Process ?

I don't have any specific recommendations for the transition from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, but, for a dedicated PT machine, where you demand reliability, I would always make a backup (or three) of...

Re: Preinstalled VST instruments?

I think MiniGrand is part of one of the FirstAIR instrument bundles (there are two) which come with ProTools. They should be on your download page.

Re: Preinstalled VST instruments?

ProTools does not support VST. The PT plugin format is called AAX. There are two kinds - AAX and AAX-DSP. The latter is used on HDX systems and Carbon.

If you want to use VST format plugins, you...

Re: MacBookPro Max Fan Noise

Just tested here using a little free application called Endurance by Tunabelly software.

Ambient temp in my room is 20degC and I have the laptop...

Re: PT 2022 release?

As I've pointed out before, there are 8 or 9 people at the top of Avid who get paid $1m+ per annum. It's all very clear from their publicly available accounts (including the names), which I have...

Re: Used Carbon hardware without software

I thought that the copy of Pro Tools that comes with Carbon is "untransferable" - or is that only the Ultimate bit ?

Re: Used Carbon hardware without software

Yes you can use it standalone without registering it and without ProTools but you will not be able to run any DSP plugins on it. So, if you have Logic you can use the Carbon as a basic interface. But...

Re: ADAT to AES conversion

Ah, I see, my apologies. It might work, but the problem I had with connecting my Carbon to an RME ADI-2 Pro fs (over optical S/PDIF) was more some protocol level problem, rather than a plain clocking...

Re: ADAT to AES conversion

I don't know anything about AES at all, but Carbon doesn't have an AES output anyway, so not sure how it's relevant.

The question was about connecting a Carbon to a Grace904b monitor controller...

Re: ADAT to AES conversion

S/PDIF over optical is the way, but there's a problem, documented in another thread, with some external converters not locking to the Carbon. It's worth pinging Mark Corbin if you try this and it...

Re: PT 2022 release?

2021.12 is the same, no update.
It's only the Complete Plugin Bundle that has been updated, and for some reason it's been updated as ~29 separate items.

Re: Apple Studio/Mini - What bits we need

Well, the comments are relevant because they expose the differences and potential pitfalls and limitations of any given choice. It's just intended to be useful information, not an argument.

Re: Migrating VI's from old Mac Pro to Mac Studio Ultra

Ah, yes, good point. Agree - although it does depend on whether your particular sample libraries support this kind of linking. I had problems with SD3 and ended up downloading it all again last time...

If you want some infor on SSDs and NVMe, I recommend this really long thread,

It is part of the MacPro sub-forum, so not an...

Re: Migrating VI's from old Mac Pro to Mac Studio Ultra

New installs only. If JFreak (Moderator) was around, he'd back me up.

Apple's migration utility used to work well, but in my experience, no longer does.

On Windows, the registry made this kind...

Re: Apple Studio/Mini - What bits we need

Yes, the Apple Studio is really an update to the 2013 Trashcan in terms of design - putting all the expandability (storage etc) on the outside. The main difference is that the speed of the GPU is...
