iMac G5 1.8 here. So far the best Mac I've had for audio. I get far better performance and reliablity than my old G5 (single) Powermac in Pro Tools and Logic. No regrets.

iMac runs Pro Tools like a dream here. xBench score of 157. Well over the score of 90 on my TiBook 867. No crashes or errors (yet).

I've used the Behringer headphone amps - they worked well. If you have a bigger budget the HearBack stuff looks killer.

I had the same exact setup before and it ran solid (better than with my old G5). Just get plenty of ram and a firewire hards drive (if you don't already).

For what you want to do, the iMac will do it well. Just get as much ram as you can and you'll be happy. Performance-wise, Logic runs far better than Pro Tools, but can't really handle audio well -...

Definitely consider going up the Panther. For me its been the fastest/most solid setup ever (10.3.x and PT 6.4).
