Consolidate audio (SHIFT+OPTION+3) on sections or whole tracks when you're happy with them. Remove unused regions often. (SHIFT+COMMAND+U, SHIFT+COMMAND+B)

From what you describe, you would have the same channel strip effects, because you would be playing the instrument on the same channel. You can't open effects on midi channels.

I'd love to hear how it works out! Timing to me looks like it would be easy to run a new ProTools Hackintosh rig for 5-7 years from now... plenty long for an update cycle. I will probably do that...
